Shelby Supercars has upped the hypercar ante with the all-new, Bugatti Veyron-thrashing Tuatara supercar. It has an incredible 1,331bhp.
That horsepower figure dwarfs the standard Veyron's 987bhp and it's generated by a twin-turbo 7.0-litre V8 engine. Top speed is rumoured to be a barely believable 275mph.
This could be the car that topples the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport as the fastest production model in the world. The Veyron's record stands at 268mph.
The sensational Tuatara - which gets its name from a lizard native to New Zealand - was styled by Jason Castriota. He's currently Saab's design boss, but has previously worked at Ferrari, Rolls-Royce and Pininfarina.
The Tuatara's teardrop-shaped glasshouse is reminiscent of the new Pagani Huayra - one of the few cars that can match this for sheer visual drama - and a rear pair of wings replace a traditional spoiler. These are called 'dihedral stabilisers' and they're inspired by aircraft to aid high-speed stability.
The chassis and most of the bodywork are made from carbon fibre, and each of the 19-inch wheels is made from a single mould of carbon fibre - believed to be a world first.
This religious use of carbon, and the fact it is rear-wheel drive, means the Tuatara is reportedly just two-thirds the weight of the four-wheel drive Veyron.
There are no official performance statistics yet, but it's likely that the Tuatara will match - and perhaps even beat - the Bugatti's unbelievable 2.5-second 0.62mph time.
American company Shelby Supercars (a company with no relation to famous American Mustang and Cobra tuner Caroll Shelby) has history with Bugatti, having eclipsed the Veyron's top speed before
In 2007 the Shelby SSC Ultimate Aero took the record with an official run of 256mph, beating both the Veyron's claimed 252mph top speed and the official Guinness Book of Records world record, held by the Koenigsegg CCX at the time at 242mph.
However, in 2010, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport smashed that with an official run of 268mph. It will take a spectacular effort for the Tuatara to reach the top.
